Re: CR 7 [#permalink]
PU - Planted in US
PNU - Not planted in US
TU = Total acerage in US = PU+PNU

%yeild considering planted acerage = U/PU (USA)
%yeild considering planted acerage = S/PS (Soviet)

But U/PU > S/PS
Possibility is that S is much smaller than PS

Considering total acerage
% yeild in US = U/( PU + PNU )

%yield in Soviet = S/( PS + PNS )

U/( PU + PNU ) < S/( PS + PNS )

The only way it can heppen is PNU > PNS because
U/PU > S/PS
So Soviet had few areas barren compared to USA.

I warn that this method is not always great to employ
for solving CRs like this. But works most of the time.
Just stop at writing equations and dont proceed to
derive something. By look at equations you can infer
something.

Yup! Look at it this way. Obviously, the US agricultural techlogy or whatever it's called was superior to that of the USSR during the 10-year period since they harvested more per acre. When we compare the total acreage, the USSR could have outperformed the US only if the planted area had been larger. Choice A supports this reasoning.

Agreed but how can you deny other choices. Try refuting it.
