My profile:
Demographic: 27 yo Asian-American male [shocker!]
College: University of Virginia: BS Systems Engineering, minor in Computer Science
GPA: 3.25
GMAT: 740 (98%) - 47Q (82%), 46V (99%)
Work Experience: Have worked at the world's largest IT Consulting firm for just over 5 years. Focused early in my career on application development (Java/J2EE), but have moved to team lead and management roles in the last 3 years. Worked on two strategy-related roles to help with organizational strategy and planning. Promoted to executive level in less than 5 years, which is ahead of the curve. Have been working in the government industry with U.S. Federal clients.
Highlight: Took a voluntary assignment from a unique program through my company working in Sri Lanka for 4 months this past year (one month worknig remotely in Singapore). Accepted a 50% paycut and no per-diem (psuedo-volunteer) to work with an NGO in Sri Lanka whose mission is to promote IT in the government and to its citizens. My team of 3 consultants from London, LA, and Washington DC (myself) worked with government and NGO officials to plan and design a government IT infrastructure and front-end web portal for the country of Sri Lanka. We also helped in preparing the RFP to go out for bid on the work.
Extras: Regularly volunteer at local hospital through my company. Coaching a youth basketball team this season.
Languages: I have limited fluency in Spanish and Hindi
My Sri Lanka experienced confirmed my interest in international business, and I have developed an interest in global economics. I would like to continue on the idea of working in emerging markets and developing nations. I do not have an economics background, but I did have some exposure to the World Bank and UNDP while I was working in Sri Lanka, and would like to build on that.
My schools of interest (this list hasn't been closely scrutinized, nor have I looked deeply into their Economics & Finance/Int'l Biz programs):
Wharton, Columbia, Kellogg, Darden, INSEAD, Haas. How are my chances at these places?
I haven't started applications yet, and right now I'm struggling about whether I should try to apply this year - maybe even just a shot at one or two schools - or take another year to strengthen up my application so I can apply for Fall 2008.
