\frac{2\frac{2}{3}-1\frac{1}{4}}{\frac{1}{2}-\frac{1}{6}}=\frac{\frac{8}{3}-\frac{5}{4}}{\frac{1}{2}-\frac{1}{6}}=\frac{\frac{8*4-5*3}{12}}{\frac{6-2}{12}}=\frac{\frac{32-15}{12}}{\frac{4}{12}}=\frac{32-15}{4}=\frac{17}{4}

Ans: "D"

2 2/3 - 1 1/4 = 8/3 - 5/4 = (32 - 15 )/12 = 17/12

1/2 - 1/6 = (3-1)/6 = 2/6 = 1/3

So 17/12/1/3 = 17/12 * 3 = 17/4

Answer - D

(2-1), (2/3-1/4) so in mixed frac: 1 5/12 => 17/12 / 1/3 = 17/4.

Is this approach correct? or is it just a fluke?

2 2/3 - 1 1/4 can be written as (2 + 2/3) - (1 + 1/4), so (2-1) + (2/3 - 1/4) = (1) + (5/12).
Earlier we converted mixed fraction to fractions, so we can do the reverse now i.e.
(1)(5/12)

Your approach is good.
