IMO A; literally brush
required that theA literally brush the B
correct construction

The Schliffen Plan, which the German army used to invade France in 1914, required that the last man on the right of the German line literally brush the English Channel with his sleeve.

(A) literally brush --> correct: subjunctive mood: bossy verb + that + subject + be verb <=> required that the last man brush
(B) was supposed to literally brush --> need "bossy verb + that + subject + be verb" construction
(C) would have literally brushed --> same as B
(D) will literally be brushing --> same as B
(E) was to literally brush --> same as B

can anybody explain why answer choice B is wrong as 'was supposed' is the verb for 'the last man' while answer choice A 'literally brush' has a adverb + noun construction.

The literally brush we have there is actually part of a (split) infinitive (to + the plain form of a verb).

This is the sentence that option B leads to:
The Schliffen Plan, which the German army used to invade France in 1914, required that the last man on the right of the German line was supposed to literally brush the English Channel with his sleeve.

After required that... we can't go with was. We need the plain form of the verb, the one that we use after to. We can apply this by checking whether we can say "to was supposed to". Since we can't, we would not want to mark this option.
