Any explanation on why did you eliminate the options with 'which'?

Sure,

Which can be used in three scenarios,

1. It will be followed by a comma (,) and it will be referred back to a relative pronoun.
For Example, You should help her at this crucial time, which is really tough for her.

2. both of which
For Example, I love to visit Canada and Russia, both of which are massive country by area.

3. In the placement of Noun
For example, Which of the things you like are very expensive.

Why' by which' is wrong? Option d looks wrong because of phrase "publication in 1922 of xyz". Got famous because of publication or because of book.
Please explain!!!

This question checks the understanding of the meaning

Published in 1922, Claude McKay became familiar to poetry readers through Harlem Shadows, a book that helped[/u] to spur a literary movement known as the Harlem Renaissance.

(A) Published in 1922, Claude McKay became familiar to poetry readers through Harlem Shadows, a book that helped - modifier issue , looks like Claude Mckay was published in 1922 - completely WRONG
(B) Published in 1922, Harlem Shadows was the book by which Claude McKay became familiar to readers of poetry, helping - Modifier issue , so through this sentence it looks like Claude Mckay helped to spur a literary movement , instead the"Harlem Shdaows" spurred it so WRONG
(C) Published in 1922, Harlem Shadows was the book by which Claude McKay became familiar to poetry readers and helped - Same issue as B - WRONG
(D) Claude McKay became familiar to readers of poetry through the publication in 1922 of Harlem Shadows, a book that helped - Correctly conveys the intended meaning - CORRECT
(E) Harlem Shadows was published in 1922 and was the book by which Claude McKay became familiar to poetry readers, helping - Wrong tense , it should be simple past tense as there is particular time reference - WRONG

I hope this helps.

[ Claude McKay was not published in 1922, wrong usage of modifier]

(B) Published in 1922, Harlem Shadows was the book by which Claude McKay became familiar to readers of poetry, helping
[ we can't use helping. this is wrong usage]

(C) Published in 1922, Harlem Shadows was the book by which Claude McKay became familiar to poetry readers and helped
[1) and helped... who helped Claude Mckay ?? wrong 2) if somehow u convince yourself that helped is referring to book.. then ||sm error]

(D) Claude McKay became familiar to readers of poetry through the publication in 1922 of Harlem Shadows, a book that helped
[right choice- a book that helped.. correct]

(E) Harlem Shadows was published in 1922 and was the book by which Claude McKay became familiar to poetry readers, helping
[Wrong usage of helping... there is no cause and effect.. relation]

Caution:

Although no other choice than (D) looks correct, (D) in itself seems to be suffering from the meaning issue.

As per the original stimulus and the rest of the choices, Claude McKay became famous through Harlem Shadows not through the "publication of Harlem Shadows". Per (D), the act of "publication" of Harlem Shadows made Claude McKay "familiar" to the readers of the poetry, not the book "Harlem Shadows" itself.

So, that's some disparity an official question might avoid.

Can you share the usage of "by which" on GMAT?
I choose option C!
