Re: In a certain year the United Nations' total expenditures were $1.6 bil [#permalink]
67.8% by 6 countries

(1) is not sufficient, as x could be in the remaning 12.8% or in (100 - 67.8)% part of contribution

(2) is also not sufficient, because there is no break-up given for the other highest donors

(1) + (2)

Not sufficient as again country x's contrubtion relative to other countries is not known

In a certain year the United Nations’ total expenditures were $1.6billion. Of this amount, 67.8 percent was paid by the 6 highest-contributing countries, and the balance was paid by the remaining 153 countries. Was Country X among the 6 highest-contributing countries?

1) 56 percent of the total expenditures was paid by the 4 highest-contributing countries, each of which paid more than Country X.

2) Country X paid 4.8 percent of the total expenditures.

1) 56% was paid by first 4 countries, X relative position among 153 + 2 is not available so it could be first , middle or last ... Insufficient
2) Does not provide relative position of X: Insufficient

Combine 1 & 2 ; remaining of 67.8 -56 = 11.8 and 4.8 percent is X ; So it could be 7% 5th and 4.8% 6th or 6% 5th 5.8% 6th and 4.8 % 7th ... inconclusive -- E

Another example of how simple logic is better.
Condition: 67.8%-6 countries
32.2%- rest
Was X among 6? Yes,No
S.1. 56% - 4 countries and each of them>X
if X among 6, then 5+6=11.8%. No problem to be in 6 or in rest. Not sufficient

S.2. X - 4.8% of total expenditures. The same as in S.1. Not sufficient

S1+S2=Not any news

1) Top 6 countries - 68% (rounded off for the sake of simplicity)
2) Remaining countries - 32%

Country X among (1) OR (2)?

A. Top 4 countries - 56%

We are not sure how much Country X paid. Insufficient.

B. Country X - 4.8%

The top 6 paid 67.8%, which could be roughly 11% each, so X could be in the bottom 153; the top 5 may have paid all of the 67.8% other than 4.8%, so X could have been 6th.
Clearly insufficient.

Combined,
Top 4 countries - 56%
Remaining contribution from the total 68% - 12%

(1) Of this 12% b/w 5th and 6th country, Country X MAY have paid 4.8% and another country MAY have paid 7.2%. So, Country X IS among Top 6.

(OR)

(2) Of this 12% b/w 5th and 6th country, Two different countries MAY have paid all of 12% - each contributing more than Country X. So, Country X CANNOT be among Top 6.

Insufficient.
