Hi gmat909,
I think that the 700 can be seen as a little low given your overall profile. You should understand, though, that if you re-take the GMAT and your score goes down into the 600s, this could spell trouble. So I would urge caution: if you have doubts about whether your score will go up or down, be careful because going down can harm you greatly.
You received First Class honors upon graduation, so make sure you reference that throughout the application, as that is very important. The most effective way to build an alternative transcript is literally to get a one-year degree somewhere (an isolated course here and there does not always do the job, but isolated courses with high grades can reinforce the idea that you were on an upward trend if you had an upward trend in your undergraduate grades). Getting a one-year degree would take a lot of money, time and effort, and most candidates don’t want to make that effort. Your need to establish other metrics to prove your academic strength is not totally clear to me, because you have the First Class credential. Was there any distinction greater than First Class? (Sometimes a university has First Class with Distinction)... Let me know as that could influence my advice.
For the schools you are targeting, you can potentially be within range if you put together an outstanding application. So take care with the applications - invest the time you need to write excellent essays, ensure your recommendations are stellar, and position yourself very well.
Best wishes,

Hi,
I am planning for fall 2012 intake and have schools like Duke, Darden, McCombs, and Ross on my list. My Profile is as follows:
GMAT: 700 (Q50 V34)
GPA: 59% Aggregate (First Class as per Mumbai university)
Work Experience: 4.5 years till the time I apply. Promoted every year and currently leading a team to of nine. Role is mix of Business Analyst and Support.
Extra Circular: Captained College football team and won second place in university level football competition.
Have been a part of an NGO since last six years and led diverse teams to improve funding.
My area of concern are:
1. Considering I am an Indian, is a 700 enough to get into top 20 B schools.?
2. Spoken to quite an few people and they are of the opinion that building an alternative transcript would be a great idea as a 59% doesn't meet many top B schools criteria. However, I believe that If a take a calculus or statistics class would that make a difference on my application as I have a 50 in quant. Also, it would be great if someone can help me with other courses that can be taken up to build an alternative transcript.
