Most of the colleges ask for recommendation from current supervisor. Does it need to be necessarily my immediate manager. Can i take reco from my manager's manager. I was under my manager's manager for 2.5 years and for the past 1 year i have been working under my current manager. Will this require any additional information to be provided (in the optional essays) as to why i did this?

Saurabh,

Yes, you can do that. It will not be an issue and you do not have to explain it. Just request your recommender to clearly establish the line of work from him to you when he writes your recommendation.
