Projects: Hands-on International Assignments

Start-up Projects
Understanding innovation and entrepreneurship is essential for leaders. Even in large corporations, a successful CEO must know what it takes to create and grow a business.

In a team of about 6 participants, you will work with an early-stage, high-tech venture and help it develop its business plan, validate its business model, or provide assistance to move the company to its next stage. You may even get the chance to develop your own entrepreneurial ideas.
  • Since 2002, over 120 high-potential start-ups have worked with our MBA participants
  • In Switzerland, over half the leading technology start-ups (in terms of funds raised) have worked with IMD MBA or EMBAs.

Start-up projects cover diverse sectors and issues, such as :
  • Developing the market entry strategy for a biomedical product
  • Re-engineering the value proposition for a medical device company
  • Fine-tuning the value system for an SAP service company
  • Identifying the channels to market a new loudspeaker technology

Discovery Expedition
The Discovery Expedition is much more than a business visit: develop your leadership skills, apply what you have learned in class to a real situation, address local business issues and make a difference.

You will work directly with small and medium-sized enterprises to:
  • improve current business processes
  • provide know-how to the management team
  • examine financing
  • transfer best practices in marketing, HR, operations, etc

Preparation starts in the international political economy course by learning about South Africa and the challenges and opportunities in emerging markets. You will also work with the companies prior to your departure and continue to work with them after your return, to support the implementation of your suggestions.

International Consulting Projects (ICPs)
For 30 years IMD participants have worked on important strategic issues with top management of international and medium-sized companies such as AstraZeneca, Maersk, Nestlé Professional and Plumettaz. Each project is carried out by a team of five or six people, supervised by Faculty members who have extensive experience in consulting or line management. Participants frequently travel to international destinations when working on their projects. Since we started the ICPs in 1980, participants have completed more than 440 projects in 65 countries across 5 continents.

ICP 1: Assess a growth opportunity
You will conduct an industry analysis, assess the company's capability to grow and analyse new market or product opportunities.

ICP 2: Plan and implement change
You will create an implementation plan for an important strategic change, design a pilot and assist with prototyping, be part of the implementation plan and help manage the impact.

More than 50% of the clients are repeat customers, showing that your ICP creates real value.
