INSEAD language requirement [#permalink]
27 Feb 2008, 15:00
Can anyone add any color about INSEAD's language requirements? As background, I'm a native English speaker who knows decent Spanish, but reads/writes it better than hears/speaks. I don't have any 3rd language skills. Does anyone know how tough the required proficiency levels are? How fluent is it to have "practical" and "basic" knowledge of a language? For instance, would getting a 5 on the AP Spanish exam generally be equivalent to meeting the practical or basic level (I apologize for the American-centric example considering most people interested in this school are probably unfamiliar with the AP program)? I'm really interested in this school but I've had concerns about the language requirements. I'm thinking that if I can brush up my Spanish to the practical level that it will be fairly easy to get a 3rd language up to the basic level, which I could start doing now. Thanks for any input!

Thanks for any input! I can't comment on the Spanish exam since I don't know what level 5 in Spanish means. Regarding the 3rd language, I think 5-6 months should be enough to get to the basic level. For example, you need to be level A2 to certify French as your third language. I took French for 3 semesters in school and then I passed the A2 exam. Granted that 3 semesters span 12 months, but I was attending only one 3-hour class per week. And good think is that most of the third language exams at INSEAD are written only (no oral), so that makes it little easier.

If you choose French language, you'll ONLY need 80-100 hours of learning to clear the INSEAD language entry requirement. As for the INSEAD Language Exit requirement, you will need 60-80 hours of study. It is very much achievable using the Frenchfaster Accelerated Learning Method. You get to work with a private tutor through skype, at a very cheap price.

If you get 105 or over in TOEFL, I think you are golden. Anyways, here is a link to the language requirement for INSEAD. https://mba-aol.insead.edu/documents/languages/language_policy.pdfThis should clear everyone's doubts.
