Interpreting word problem [#permalink] New post 16 Jan 2010, 12:09
Hi,
Can somebody explain the interpretation for the following question:

Q: If in a certain office, 25% of the computers are equipped with built-in modems and infrared ports, what percentage of the computers that are not equipped with either of these devices?
1. Half of the computers that are equipped with built-in modems do not have infrared ports.
2. 35% of all computers are equipped with infrared ports but do not have built-in modems.

I do understand that both the statements are required to solve.
But the doubt is regarding interpreting the first statement. how it can infer that 25% of all the computers are equipped with modems but not infrared ports....

Thanks in advance.

Modem and Infrared + Modem and No Infrared = Total Modem
25 + .5x = x
Solve for x
25 = .5x
x = 50 so Modem and No Infrared = 25
