Leadership Qualities? [#permalink] New post 04 Oct 2006, 17:48
Is leadership experience as important as everyone makes it seem? Is it necessary for all types of mbas?

I can understand if the goal of the applicant is to become a manager etc. But what about for career switchers? I come from a very technical background in IT, and I want to switch into Financial analysis, or investing banking or equity research. I also plan to do my CFA at the same time if possible.

Should I make this my main goal in my essays? Or should I use my backup plan, which is to gain the business skills to be a product manager in the same company?

How should IT -> finance switchers sell themselves?

Yes, it defintely does matter. But keep in mind that "leadership" as we're defining here isn't about managing large teams or leading bug projects as much as it is showing how you go beyond your job description and make a positive impact on the organizatoin around you. No matter what field you're in, you should have had a chance to do that. Adcomms are looking for applicants who want to do more than pick up specific academic skills that can be learned from a book.
