MBA Programs and lacking in Work Experience [#permalink] New post 10 Feb 2013, 23:40
I have a 3 year Bachelors Degree in Accounting from an AMBA & AACSB Accredited British University (Top 50-ish in the UK), I plan to Apply to MBA Programs next year (2014), specifically I want to get into Texas A&M Mays. I also will have completed CFA Lvl 1, CAIA Lvl 1, FRM Part 1 & 2, and CIA Part 1 & 2.

My problem is that I am lacking in Work Experience, by Feb 2014 (Round 2 Deadline) I will have 9 Months of Post Bachelors Degree Work Experience and 14 Months of Total Work Experience in 3 different Countries and Industries.

I am also looking at UT Dallas, UT Austin (Mccombs), Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and Brigham Young.

Any Suggestions (Assuming I Get 710+ on my GMAT)?

Edit: I have 2nd Class 1st Division Honors (Equivalent to a 3.33-3.67 GPA according to the Fulbright Commission).

I suggest spending a few more years in getting solid work experience, and hopefully promotion(s). Even if promotions don't materialise, your efforts in proactively taking a lead in activities at work will not go unnoticed. In turn, your recommendations will be stronger, and your chances in getting to a good school will increase.

Any particular reason why you need an MBA at this stage of your career?

Decided to apply to a few top MBA programs this year despite my lack of experience (~2 years if I matriculate this fall). I tried my best to demonstrate in my essays I've made a huge impact in my short amount of experience (I work at a small business) in helping create structure, taking on leadership roles, etc.

Still don't know the results. However, in retrospect, I do feel I could have put together a better app. I am highly considering making a more informed, aggressive run next year (will have another year under my belt) if I don't get into a school.

In regards to your situation though, my opinion is that I do feel ~2 years of experience (post-undergrad) would be the bare, bare minimum of applying to a top MBA school. Can't verify this is true, but it seems to be that the optimal time to apply (in which you'd have the best chance of getting in) is after you have ~4-5 years.

I agree with two years being the bare minimum. and it really helps if you have done something impressive... I mean if you have been working in McKinsey for those two years then yes you will have a shot, if you were coding for a small startup, much less likely.
