linda,

i am currently working on my essays and my question is whether i should hammer home my "story" or a particular trait that i want the adcomms to know in all the essays for a school. ive heard that you should attempt to set a theme and follow it throughout all the essays, but i feel like that would be overkill. im trying to use each essay to highlight one or two traits about myself. true i wont have enough space to really elaborate on them, but i feel like that would provide a better all around picture of me. whats your take on this? hammer home a central story and unify a message in all the essays, or take each individually and paint that particular dimension of yourself. btw, you have a great web site... but you dole out so many tips i wonder if that prevents you from getting more clients or not? heh. but thanks anyways!!!

I couldn't agree more strongly with the unifying theme to an application approach. The application is supposed to present you as a multi-faceted human being. You don't have a theme. A "theme" is nothing more than a label are pigeon hole, and the last thing you want is a neat little label attached to your name or your application stuck in a narrow pigeon hole! Make it as hard as possbile for the adcom tollable or pigeon-hole you.

You want your application to portray you as many different facets as reasonably possible. That's how you can show you have something unique to contribute to the school.

Each essay, like almost every piece of writing, should have a theme, but each essay should complement the other elements of your application and bring out something new about you.

Ok. Now I'll get off my soap box. Whew. You can read more of my opinion on this subject at "Solving the MBA Application Puzzle."

And of course, if you would like to pay for advice, you can obtain information on MBA admissions consulting and editing.
