Hi everybody,
I am newbie to this forum and I found this forum very encouraging. I plan to take my GMAT sometime next year but I would like to start my preparation from now. I have one year experience as a software engineer and I am very much interested to move onto the management side. It would be great if anybody can guide me as to what books I should start off as a beginner and also advice me what practice tests I should take etc. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I highly recommend starting off with Cracking the GMAT, from Princeton Review. It has the best overall review of the test and very good strategies. It also comes with 4 practice tests on CD, and another one online. The tests are great because they have answer explanations -- be sure to review those, even for the ones you get right.

The other musts are the official materials -- 11th edition Official Guide (it has a TON of practice questions, but no strategy), and the GMATPrep downloadable tests (go to http://www.mba.com). The GMATPrep tests are free.

Start there, and come here for the Challenges! Lots of good stuff here.

1. OG 11th Edition
2. Manhattan Gmat

You can disregard the rest unless you need more practice.
