Hi All
Can any one explain me the answer.See tha attached gif file for question.
My understanding says we are talking about poor so why "it" should be used. As seen in answer choice E

Sentence is talking about the 'plight of the poor', not just the poor. Hence the need for it.

e.g.

When discussing the plight of the Iraqi's, Tony Blair seemed to not care about it.

Although worried about the rainforests, I am not particularly bothered about visiting them.

Yeah E is a right choice - THEM refers to only poor.

if it were "the poor"... them is right:


It's what is called "notional agreement in english"
nouns such as "people, etc" ask for a plural form of the verb

however "the plight of the poor"... ( I had the same confusion at the first time , I saw "the poor" not the " the plight of the poor"
