Please provide your evaluation and suggest some target schools based on my profile.

Academics

Undergraduate: Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI), B Tech., Marine Engineering, 68.50 %(1ST Class). I don’t know what GPA this converts to but I was in the top 15 percent of my class. Highest overall percentage was probably in the mid 70%.

Graduate: Southern New Hampshire University, MS, Computer Information System, GPA - 3.54,

GMAT: 700 – 43Q, 42V. I am taking it again to achieve the 80/80 split.

Resume highlights

9 yrs work experience

Current (August 2005 – Present): Vice President, Program Manager, Bank of America Securities.

I manage a program of projects for the cash equities business. I also manage people(about 12, have managed up to 30) and budget (1.5 million in projects).

I am a 6-Sigma Green-Belt certified process optimization coach and have lead many bank wide projects

Previously positions: Project Manager, Development Manager, Software Engineer in companies such as JP Morgan, Fiserv, Verizon, Sybase. I have been promoted once very two years and have consistently been rated very high in my annual appraisals.

Started a 5-person product development firm based out of Kathmandu, Nepal in 2002 but had to close down in 2004. Looking back I think the company failed because my partner and I did not have the same vision and also because we were unable to secure additional capital to sustain operations.

Extracurricular Activities/Community Involvement

I am the founder and President of a non-profit organization with the goal of providing educational assistance to children of Nepalese immigrants in India.

As a youth Officer of American Nepalese Association (ANA), I am engaged in various activities of the organization such as coordinating forums on issues relevant to the community and coaching and mentoring high school kids.

I am a member of the Benefits Committee team for Adhikaar, which is a New York-based women-led non-profit organization.

I am a member of the Bank of America speaking network (affiliated to Toastmasters International). I take on different leadership roles weekly club meetings: a toastmaster, a speech evaluator, and grammarian. I am working on my competent communicator and leadership certifications.

I have done participated in numerous community outreach programs through the bank such as Habitat for Humanity etc.

I am trained vocalist and have worked as a music teacher

I was a semi-professional actor in my college days.

Worked part-time as a high school math and science teacher for several years.

Personal Facts

I am a Nepalese citizen, though I was born in India. I was raised in Nepal and finished my basic schooling there before moving to India for undergraduate studies.

I have been living in the United States since 1997 and I am currently a permanent resident.

I am 34 years old

I was in the Merchant Marines for 2 years.

Post MBA Goals

Although the company I started in 2002 failed, I have learned a lot from that experience. At heart I am an entrepreneur and I want to give another shot at running my own business. Post MBA, I want to start my own financial product development firm that will cater to the needs of retail and Investment banks. Long term, I want to get involved with - and possibly start my own - venture capital firm to assist entrepreneurs in Nepal.

Thank you,

I think you have an overall strong profile with lots of things (suchas your non-profit work and hobbies) to set you apart from other applicants.

My main point of caution is that you're somewhat older than the typical student at a top business school. While b-schools don't discriminate based on age,, when someone with nine years of experience applies, they'll ask a lot of question along the lines of "Why do you want an MBA now?" The key for you will be tying this to your post-MBA career goals.

Give this some more thought. You're getting close to the point where an executive MBA (such as at Wharton or NYU) may make more sense.
