Preliminary Profile Eval [#permalink] New post 22 Feb 2012, 12:44
Hi, I am pursuing entering a dual MBA/MA in International Development (some programs are offered directly like that or under a different name but the gist is the same) for the 2013 school year. I was hoping to get a preliminary evaluation (haven´t taken the GMAT yet and I´m currently studying for it)

GPA: 3.23 (due to the dual degree program, do not have a major GPA, also worked as many as two jobs each semester in order to help fund college though they aren´t interested in excuses for low GPAs)
GMAT: practice scores have gone from 530 to 600 to 650 (I am taking a course currently and have plenty of time left before I need to take the GMAT to keep working)
Undergrad: BU, Dual Degree - Business Admin. focus in Finance and Int. Business and BA in Int. Relations focus in Int. Econ and Europe
Extra-s: Multiple tutoring/mentoring programs, Model UN (with several leadership roles in conference planning), Alianza Latina, and various other "social and peace" oriented clubs
Stats: Female, would be 25 when beginning program, 1st Generation - Latina, Fluent in Spanish and English, beginner in French

Work Experience
(Work throughout college)
Work Study - career services, research - based
Internships - marketing internship at an organization that planned interships abroad programs with universities, international consulting, and sustainable development internship abroad - spain to be specific

Post College
Teacher via TFA - currently in my 2nd year
Will be staying at my school for a 3rd year even though my commitment with TFA will be over.

My specific interest in international development is educational development and I think it´s very important to gain experience in understanding how being a teacher works and how you actually teach students before attempting to organize projects or change curriculum and already established programs. I think the combined degree will adequately prepare me to work in project management/administrative positions in development.

The programs I want to apply to are MBA programs that will allow me to pursue this dual degree. As of now these include (not meaning I will apply but just where research has taken me): Georgetown, GW, American, Harvard, Columbia, NYU, John Hopkins (inconjunction with INSEAD, TUCK or WHarton as their own MBA doesn´t appear to offer the dual degree with their MA program).

Thoughts? I am looking for advice on where to apply - other schools would also be good to know about and thoughts on profile for those schools.

I think the schools you're looking at are as good as you'll get when it comes to an MBA/MA in IR.

The bigger question is whether you'll be competitive or not. And that really comes down to the GMAT. You otherwise have a pretty decent profile - enough to have an outside shot at even the very top MBA programs at Harvard and Wharton.

Focus on the GMAT, and nothing else. You have the time. You should shoot for 700, and ideally a 720+ to be safe. With a score in that range, and schools like HBS and Wharton will be stretches (but where you have enough of a chance that they're worth applying to), Columbia, Tuck, INSEAD, and NYU will be sweet spots (where you will be competitive), and schools like Georgetown being a reasonable safety (and a school that is still great with the combined MBA/MA- which will still get you to your goals).
