Hello!

I'm the first person to graduate college in my immediate family, and I identify as an under-represented minority though I have a caucasian surname. I would like to know how much additional work experience I need and which kinds of activities I will need to submit a competitive application to a top 15 domestic/ top 5 international in 2012 or 2013.

1)Full time Work Experience:
4.5 Months at a top consumer products company (Full-Time Temp Internship) working in product development. 3.5 months working as a strategic sourcing analyst for a top eyewear manufacturer (ongoing full time). Both companies have very strong household brand names.

2)GMAT
730 47q 44v.

3) UnderGrad:
UC Irvine, 2010, Business Economics & with specialization in International Issues. GPA 3.1, but it was around a 3.5 during my final year.

Activities:
4) Attended 3 leadership institutes and conferences as a fraternity/InterFraternity Council Executive, participated in National Student Advertising Competition one year, played men's club volleyball one year. Studied Abroad in the Netherlands, Interned in Washington DC for a NPO, and interned for a fortune 100 company.

5)Post MBA Goals
I would like to work in consulting and then later transition into corporate management or pursue entrepreneurial opportunities.

Thank you very much :)

Typically, applicants need a minimum of 2 years of work experience at matriculation. That's just because it takes a while for anyone to get insight into a company before being able to truly lead it. This is obviously not a strict rule - there are always going to be applicants who have significant leadership experience in their extracurricular activities and are able to demonstrate readiness for an MBA program based on that leadership, but those applicants are very few in number.
I like the household names you're with, but the schools are going to want to hear what you did for them. Yes, your under-represented minority status will help you so be sure that is more than just a box you've checked in the application: let's hear about what you've overcome and how you helped others on the way. If you have gone through a strong management training program through your employment, you may already be able to apply after just 1 year of experience (so that you will matriculate after 2 years).

Thanks for helping to clear that up. I was unsure as to whether the work experience was measured at the time of application or at the time of matriculation.
