Hi Aju,

Your GMAT score and undergraduate GPA position you well for top MBA programs, though quantitative factors are only part of the equation. As you likely know, the admissions essays and recommendations are actually more important than your pure stats. It would be ideal if you could wait to apply until you receive a promotion at your current job, to show professional growth.

Since you want to be an entrepreneur, you will likely want to explain what went wrong with, what you learned from the experience, and what you will do differently when starting your own business. My team at Stratus Prep and I have worked with numerous entrepreneurs who failed in an initial endeavor and would bring that experience to the MBA classroom. When positioned correctly this can actually be tremendously valuable to the MBA AdComs as there is a growing interest in entrepreneurship and failure is inherent in taking the risks that entrepreneurship presents. As we all know, many successful entrepreneurs had failed pretty spectacularly earlier in their careers.

One potential weakness you have is current leadership/extracurricular/volunteer experience. You mention a couple leadership positions in college, but you need to show how you have been contributing to your community since college, as well. Business schools like to see that you have been committed to a specific group or organization for a significant period of time and have taken on a leadership role through which you are able to contribute strategically.

As far as the schools you listed, they are all competitive but with the right positioning in your applications, you can absolutely get in. Some of them, like Wharton and INSEAD, are reasonable stretches, but others, like Kellogg, LBS, and ISB are targets where you have a good chance of admission assuming you have an exceptional admissions package with differentiated essays and recommendations.

My colleagues at Stratus Prep and I have worked with many aspiring entrepreneurs from India, and we would be happy to help you shape your experience to best fit what the top business schools are looking for. If you are interested in learning more about how we could assist you, email me at

Good luck on your applications!
