Profile Evaluation [#permalink] New post 07 Jun 2013, 05:48
Hi
I have earned my undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from a just-below-the-cream University in India with a 3.2 GPA.
Have 2 years of work experience (till date) in the Financial Markets as a Trader for one year and Research Analyst since then in a not-so-big firm.
Scored 680 (49Q) in the first time, but planning to give it again for a score of 720+.
Has done a lot of social work while in college and while at work. Was in the top management of Rotaract Club of my University.
Passed CFA Level 1. Passed CMT Level 1. (CMT=Charterd Market Technician)
Co-ideated a successful business venture (which is running quite well today) while in college but dropped out of the project coz of my passion for the Financial Markets.
I am looking to be in the Financial Service Industry after graduation.

I need to get into any of the follwing schools: NYU Stern, Chicago Booth, Columbia, Wharton, MIT Sloan. Also I plan to keep Rotman as my backup.
I request you to please evaluate my Profile.
Thanks a lot.
:-D

I am afraid your profile may come across like your own description of your UG experience: "Just below the cream." You can't expect to target the very top business schools and yet present them with a just below the top profile (you also said the firm you work for is just below the top). You have to realize that this kind of profile is exactly what gets beat out by the throngs of other applicants who are just above the cream if you know what I mean. You would definitely need to boost the GMAT score to try to counter balance these effects, but even then you will be applying along with many others with a similar background, only perhaps hailing from top UG schools and working for top firms. CFA is nice and can make an impression, but for everyone who has the CFA level 1, there is a full Charter applicant out there touting that they have done all three. I am not saying to give up on your dream, just be realistic about diversifying your application efforts across more than just the very elite schools. There is not a single school on you list that would be a shoo-in even for top applicants just due simply to the nature of the admissions stats at those schools. Some of this advice assumes you want to go next year. If your plan is to keep applying until you get into one of these schools and you are comfortable trying again next year if it doesnt work out this year, then you should work on how you can cast your story in the most compelling way, making sure to explain why you like the financial markets so much and why now is the ideal time to get your MBA. i would still find a safetly school or two or at least a top tier backup school that is not considered the best of the best.
