I have an engineering undergrad (GPA 3.9), and 7 years of working experience doing research and process development in biotech companies. GMAT 740. I want to get a Ph. D in business. MBA doesn't fit my personality and goals. I have no business experience.

I know it is very competitive to go to the top schools. If I really want to go to top schools, will getting a master degree in ecnomics or business related fields help? And can anyone give a couple of examples of 2nd tier schools?

Any one knows about Lally School of Management and Technology (RPI)? Is it a good choice for a Ph.D interms of research and job placement?

If you want a second tier school, I'd look about Lally...what is that, like fourth tier? Most schools will have job placements on their website. I can say, however, that I've never seen a faculty member at any reasonable B School from Lally. Generally the PhD program rankings would follow similarly to the MBA rankings, except for that Chicago likely gets a boost. Some people would tell you Kellogg is second tier, others would tell you Texas is second tier, others could tell you Lally is second depends on who you're asking. Since you claim to want to attend the best programs, I'd target something that has a top 10 MBA program, where top 5 is definitely better.

A good method is to simply look at the schools where you'd like to teach, and look at where those profs come from...
