Profile Evaluation for Masters in Financial Engineering [#permalink]

Nationality: Indian
Age: 28
GMAT: 660/82% (Q48/82%, V32/64%) - AWA: Still to receive.
Education:
1) Graduate: MBA Finance from ICFAI Business School Hyderabad - mediocre B-School in India
GPA : 7.49/10
2) Undergraduate: Engineering from National Institute of Technology, Rourkela - One of the premier engineering schools in India.
Scored: 72% (not percentile), 2nd Position in the batch.
Work Ex:
(1) 2 years (after undergrad) as Assistant Manager Production with India's largest cement producer.
(2) More than two years (after MBA) as Research Analyst: commodities with India's largest propriety trading firm. The firm trades derivatives in commodities, interest rate products, stocks indices and currency that are traded at world's most active exchanges.
Goals:
To attend 1-2 yrs program in Financial Engg.
To extend my current exposure to more specialized field of quantitative finance and later to join a trading firm or a bank (trading desk) as a quantitative analyst.

RUTGERS BUSINESS SCHOOL : MATER OF QUANTITAVE FINANCE
I know that my GMAT score is not as high as it should be. But I also feel that a past experience in a trading firm and an Engg+MBA Finance background, can boost my chances in Financial Engineering course. I am also considering retaking GMAT, I can increase my quants score to 49-50.
What do you think are the chances of my admission?

At the moment you seem to be competitive for Baruch and Rutgers. You'll need to get that quant score up to be competitive for the other programs. About year ago, a close friend of mine wasn't able to get into Princeton ( Bendheim) with a near perfect GMAT and stellar GPA from an Ivy league school. If you wan't to get into a prop desk at a top-tier Investment bank / trading firm; Princeton and CMU are the two programs that can get you there even in a stagnant job market.

Thanks a lot.
I am keenly interested for Baruch, but on their website they have mentioned the average GMAT score of 704 (Q 50, V 34.4) for admitted students for fall 2010. Won't that be a hurdle for me?

Don't rely too much on the GMAT average as a yardstick, your quant score has to be higher in order to bolster your chances. I think with good essays, recommendations etc you can still be competitive even if your overall score is 50 points below the average. Getting a better score will most certainly improve your chances though.

Sorry for bothering again!
What do you think are the chances for COLLEGE OF BUSINESS AT ILLINOIS, UIUC, and how are the job prospects after doing Master of Science in Finance from there?
Their average GMAT score for the admitted students of 2010 class is 663.
One more thing I have noticed, the Masters in mathematics of Finance at Columbia University's dept of Mathematics does not need either GMAT or GRE score and the program has good rankings also. So should I apply for that?

You seem to be competitive for UIUC as well, based on my personal observation - a sample of two grads from this program, I wouldn't recommend UIUC in this Job market. If you want to add a safety school (or two) with decent placement record, I would recommend Bentley and BU (BU has new MS mathematical finance program) many buy side companies are based in Boston. Additionally, Olin MS Finance Program has strong quant bias as well, so you may want want to take a look at this program. I am not familiar with Columbia program, but I am surprised that they don't require GMAT/GRE, but anything from Columbia is better than a state school or Big ten school for that matter. Top-tier recruiters cluster around schools with cachet, given today's job market I would play safe and stick to Brand name schools with established recruitment connections. I gave my Gmat test on the 25/09/2012.
got a disastrous score of 570 (q45,v24),IR 8/8, AWA-4.5/6
I'm looking to apply for the MS in financial Engineering/Computational Finance/Information systems.
I'm a B.tech in comp sci. from 2nd tier college in India with 63%.
Do i stand a chance for a admission in the top40 universities in USA...or i should give the test again
Have only scored well in the IR section and many ppl tell m that they wont be considered for applications this year.
