Profile Evaluation for Top 15 program [#permalink] New post 17 Mar 2010, 21:48
Hi Alex,

Profile:
Korean
Age: Will be 28 at time of application
Experience: 8 months in IB, laid off for 5 months, 2 years in municipal bond IB, 1.5 years in commercial banking (presently still working)
GPA: 3.48/4.0 Business Admin - Finance, Top 50 school in 2005
GMAT: 610

I'm planning to take the GMAT again in June/July and possibly again in October if I don't perform. I'm hoping to score in the 650+ range.

I bought your MBA Field Guide years ago and I'm concerned about my career progression as you write about. Basically, have had an "Analyst" title thus far in all my positions however have had increased responsibility. I just lateraled into a new position as an analyst with Bank of America Merrill Lynch hoping to get into the securities side of the business prior to an MBA program.

Your thoughts are much appreciated. :)

Thanks for the reply.

Would I have a chance at a top 15 program given my work experience and a gmat score in the 600-650 range?

Your work experience isn't really a concern for the top 16.

GMAT needs to be in the high 600s at least, ideally 700+. You're competing against a lot of other finance dudes who will have scored well on the GMAT, and if your GMAT isn't competitive, you'll basically need a LOT of luck on your side (i.e. you take huge risks with your essays, *and* those risks pays off because the adcom who happened to read your app loves it).

If your GMAT is competitive, then you at least have a more reasonable shot at the top 16 schools, at least with the bottom half (Haas, Michigan, Duke, Darden, NYU, UCLA, Cornell, Yale)

Focus on the GMAT. Do whatever it takes to get at least a high 600s at a minimum, and 700+ if you can. Enroll in GMAT prep classes, or hire a private GMAT tutor if need be.

Retake the GMAT and shoot for a 700+, and ideally a 720+ if you want to be even considered given your profile/background.
