Profile Evaluation Help Please [#permalink] New post 21 Feb 2011, 12:59
I was wondering if you could please evaluate my profile. Thank you in advance!

Gender: Male
Age: 28
Nationality: Canadian

GMAT: 660 (82nd percentile) 5.0 AWA
GPA: 3.0 from a good Canadian Business School

Work Experience:
3.5 Years at HSBC Bank in their Commercial Banking Group. A good commercial banking job with a world bank including a good promotion during the course of my employment.
The last 1.5 years have been spent as a professional athlete.

Total experience both as an athlete and at HSBC has been 5 years.

I think I have a very unique story however I am ultimately being held back by my academics.

Extra Curricular:
All are mostly sport related. They include volunteering to help little kids get into sport every year over the past 5 years. I did some mentoring while in University.

I ultimately want to get into a top 8 US School.

What is it going to take for me to do this and do I have zero chance for Fall 2011?

Thanks

Being a pro athlete certainly helps (especially if it was in a team sport), but your GMAT is going to be a big handicap.

In the old days, adcoms were more willing to cut some slack for lower GMATs from people with unique backgrounds/experiences, simply because the distribution of GMAT scores especially for those from non-traditional backgrounds tended to be wider, with more folks on the lower end. Now, that distribution has narrowed.

If I were you, I'd do whatever it takes to boost that score. Shoot for 700 or more. Even a 680 may help. Of course there's a *chance* you can get in with a 660, but it's like saying there's a *chance* to make a 60-yard field goal (which would involve not only a perfect cadence that leads to a perfect snap, perfect placement of the ball, perfect kick that is not only accurate but strong, but also sheer luck when it comes to the direction of the wind).

Yes, we can all win on last second 3-pointers, 60 yard field goals, hole-in-one, etc. but only rely on that if you truly have no choice.

In your case, getting a 700+ will put you more in reasonable field goal range (i.e. 35-40 yards).
