I just got back from the testing center and sad to report a 650 (Q44, V36). I'm wanting to apply to Northwestern, UC Berkeley, and Wharton, but realize my score is on the low end. That said, I know adcoms look at the entire picture so I'm hoping you can provide me with some honest feedback. Here is a little about me:

Age: 32 upon matriculation
Background (recent to oldest): Junior Partner of wealth management startup (3 years), Social Media Consultant for boutique firm with projects for a few companies like Phillips and Wells Fargo (hired as non-paid consultant to the firm worked to learn Social Media (1 year same time frame as wealth management startup), Territory Sales Manager for Wells Fargo Private Client Services- managed over 30 people (3 years), Insurance Agent (1 year), Digital Magazine Startup as CEO (company failed 1 year),

Education:
3.65 Business Finance from BYU-Idaho (went there over provo due to full ride scholarship "Deans Scholar"
CEO of student food service startup - managed 25 people (won the university business competition)
Certifications: CFP

Extracurricular: 2 year missionary service volunteer in Brazil (I'm fluent Portuguese) where I led teams of 12 and 8 in service projects; Recent Volunteer "vice president" of local church - responsible for welfare needs, instruction to, and service to over 330 people.

Desire: I'm really interested in Tech and Media and want to transition that direction. I love Kellogg's MMM program and Berkeley's MOT courses. Wharton would be great for pretty much anything. I either want to start my own business while in school or do consulting for one of the top 3.

FYI: I've taken the GMAT multiple times and though I know I "can" achieve a 680+, I wonder if I should focus more on other parts of my application?

Without retaking, what are my chances at these target schools?

Hi leadout1,

I recommend you retake the exam. Your GMAT score is self-reported on your application, so admissions teams will focus on your highest score. Your current score puts you near the bottom 10th percentile for the schools you are looking at, and although this does not mean you will not be accepted, it is not a preferable position to be in.

As a note, MBA.com offers 2 free official practice exams, which are very useful for test prep.

Best,

Conrad and the Stacy Blackman Team
