Profile Evaluation Request [#permalink] New post 28 Aug 2007, 18:22
Hello everyone, I would greatly appreciate the time spent to evaluate my profile..
Thanks in advance...

Personal Information.
Age-25
Gender-Male
Citizen - Indian

Academic
I am graduate in Civil Engineering (2003) with Distinction (70.4%) & Masters in Structural Engineering (2006) with First Class (62%), from MIT (Pune University-one of the top universities in India). My rank was among top 5 in University. (We don’t have GPA system, but I was always in top 3%)

Extra Curricular
Cultural:
§ Organized & participated in various cultural events in school, college and company.
§ Participated and won language, drawing, debate competitions.
Sports:
§ Represented college and company in Cricket tournament.
Social activity:
§ Organized various programs, festivals in the college.
§ Taken free tuitions for Engineering Subjects.
§ Active member of VIKALP – Social and charitable trust for Natural Therapy.
§ Active member of I-CAN- A Alumina Network of Chrysalis- Organized and participated in social programs like cultural events, blood donation, Tree Plantation, cleaning.
§ Active member of Patni-Social- working for Child education.

Work Experience:
I have with 2.8 years' experience. Presently (since Feb. 06), I am working with MNC, Pune, India as Assoc. Design officer and functioning as Team Lead, handling projects for International clients.
Have received ‘Best performer of the Year award’ from previous employer.
Have received ‘Valuable Contribution Award’ from current employer.

Why MBA?

· I need an advance career path in Operations / GM
· I think it will take too much time to crawl up to managerial position & as a technical person the growth will be limited.
· After completing MBA from good college there will be excellent opportunity to build an international career with substantial salary rise compared with my current status.
· I am targeting US as I have a chance of scholarship; the educational standard is excellent; post MBA jobs are fairly easy get hold of; getting work permit is not all that difficult.

Recommendations would be from my previous Employer and another from my immediate supervisors who have confidence and faith in me and they would be very compelling.
I have following Questions / Doubts:

1. Is my profile good enough for the top 15 schools?
2. In MBA which specialization would be beneficiary for me? I was thinking of General Management, Operations, would it be best suited for me?
3. In GMAT and TOEFL What should be my Score target?
4. I am not applying for next year (2008) and the only reason is I am targeting top 10 schools (I am passionate about Harvard). I want to be fully prepared in every aspect. I have 1.5 years to develop myself before applying for 2009. Considering I shall have over 4 years of Work experience while applying, how should I utilize this time effectively? Which are the areas in which I should develop myself?
5. Does working out from your home country is beneficial?
6. Can you please mention some top schools for Operations/ General management?

Your work experience and work leadership may be a bit too low for most top 15 schools, even assuming you get a 700+ GMAT.

2. In MBA which specialization would be beneficiary for me? I was thinking of General Management, Operations, would it be best suited for me?

That depends on what you want to do post-MBA. Operations is a more focused specialization than GM, which can be applied in a broader range of business environments.

3. In GMAT and TOEFL What should be my Score target?
Minimum 700, but ideally 740 plus to help you stand out from crowded pool of Male Indian Engineering applicants. 280 on the TOEFL would be good enough.

You need more managerial experience at work and more leadership experience outside of work (leading people). If you are aiming for top schools they will want to stories about unusually high impact and a "fast-track" career pace.

5. Does working out from your home country is beneficial?

Do you mean does it hurt you that you are applying from India? Not really, but schools like to see international exposure so if you have none that hurts you.

6. Can you please mention some top schools for Operations/ General management?

Michigan, Virginia, and Duke are top GM programs where you might have a better chance than at HBS.

MIT, Carnegie-Mellon, Purdue and Michigan are top operations schools.

Thanks Paul.. [#permalink] New post 03 Sep 2007, 06:40
Thanks Paul for assistance, I really appreciate that. Could you please tell me,
1. I have come from village background and have strived hard to reach here. I have got full scholarship for my Engineering. I need some scholarship or assistantship to support my MBA as well. What should be my overall approach?
2. I have decided that I would choose Operations rather than GM. I have done my Masters will it help my application?
Thanks again.

Raj,

I am not a financial aid specialist, but if you need financial support then you should aim to apply in first or second round (ideally first round, but before January is usually fine). You should also lower your sights to schools where your GMAT score is well above the schools' median. Then you will be a more attractive candidate and they will have greater incentive to want to entice you. However, most schools have programs to help admitted applicants pay for their educations. You need to figure out exactly what you can afford and how much you'll need right now. Yes, your master's is an asset to your application, though it is not at all unusual for MBA applicants to already have a graduate degree so it does not help you alot.

Good luck to you,
