Profile review - Low GPA, multiple transcripts? [#permalink] New post 08 Jul 2011, 05:54
Hello Stacy,

I am very interested in using your services. I am unsure what to do, because of my situation. I have a very low GPA, but I went to 3 different undergrad schools, so not sure which GPA I would use? I graduated from University of Phoenix with a 2.49, but I only took my last 6 classes there. Prior to that I went to University of Colorado and had a 2.76 with 80 credits, and prior to that I went to a local community college and had a 3.55 with honors for 50 credits.

Also, as an unusual sidenote, I completed 170 credits, because my first major was music and I changed after that to accounting (realizing that there wasn't much of a future in music). That became an extracurricular of sorts for me, which I continue to this day.

The long and short of it, is I had to work 50+ hours per week for 7 years to finish my degree (Bachelor of Business and Accounting). I wish I could say I "matured" or something like that, but the truth of the matter is my grades got worse and worse due to having to support my family in priority of school. BTW, I am a 32 year old.

Redeeming qualities, are that I have 9 years solid experience at a Fortune 500 local telecom, progressing my way up the chain in management. In addition I recently finished my CPA after completing my schooling in 2009. My GMAT practice test scores are coming in around 690-730.

I dream of going to a top school, but know it would be a long shot. At this point I am debating whether I should even try considering the circumstances, or whether a local school such as DU would be a better choice. I don't even know if I could get into them with the low GPA.

Also, I am debating whether I want to pursue a MBA or a JD.

Any advice on my situation would be greatly appreciated!

Hi xsonusstudios,

Thanks for posting. This is a tricky question and I would need to have a dialog about which credits transferred to give a definitive answer. Usually you would take the GPA from whatever school you graduated from which would incorporate transferable credits from the prior schools. However, in this case it seems that the U Phoenix GPA does not incorporate grades from other schools. The safest bet is to contact schools you are applying to and ask them how they want it handled. Each school often has their own policies.

You may even be a better fit for an EMBA program.

If you would like, I would suggest a consultation to explore all of this in more depth. You can sign up for a free consultation here: http://www.stacyblackman.com/contact/

You have a lot going for you and the GPA is not the end all, but an admissions team may question whether your track record would improve, and whether outside (family) pressures would ease up at all to allow a focus on school.

Hope to hear from you.

Cheers,

Conrad and the Stacy Blackman Team
