Age a concern? - Profile Review Requested [#permalink]
01 Apr 2012, 08:39
This is a great forum with excellent people. I have been planning for an MBA for a while but wasn't able to work on in till now. Here are some details:
Age: Will be 30 when applying for 2013 admissions
Education: Undergrad in a Computer-related Engineering field (outside North America and Europe), GPA 4/4 Master's Degree in a Computer-related engineering field from a top Canadian university, GPA 4/4
Work Experience: ~3 years engineering in a leading semiconductor company (doing software) ~4 years (by round 1) in a small and fast growing american software company started in tech position but currently hold a management position in one of departments at the company
GMAT: 760+
Extra-curricular: very good.. both in university but mainly in an NGO.
Planning for R1/R2 for 2013 admissions..
I understand my profile is not weak, but should I be concerned about age? I do have some top schools in mind, but I have been reading that age may be an issue. Any feedback is welcome.

I have the same concern. My GMAT is not as strong as yours but I have an overall strong profile. I chose to take a shot at the April deadlines as I would be 29 at entry this fall if accepted. The other consideration I made was waiting is another year later I would get out. Several people I have spoken with for advice on this gave me the general idea that 30 and 8 years of good WE was the cap before your starting to be more of a fit for EMBA or solid night programs.

I'll be 32 with 11 years of work experience, and I received good news from many full-time MBA programs. There's no problem being 30+. People will tell you that you need a good rationale, but everyone needs a good rationale, regardless of age.

The average age at top schools sits at 27-28 years old, at 30 you are still comfortably within the middle 80% of accepted students age wise. It should not be a factor considering you also show great experience, although if you did apply 2-3 years from now it would be a tough call and executive mba programs might be more suitable.
Good luck!
