let x be the distance. Jeff arrives at 60*x/40 minutes at work which is 12 minutes late
so 60x/40-12 = 60x/48-7
Solve for x and you will get 20 miles

you can also solve this

let difference in time between two trips is 5 min

there fore 5/60 = d/40 -d/48

solving you get d = 20
