Some schools such as MIT, have a question "List your academic and/or professional awards, including the basis for your selection and the date(s) of the honor(s)."
In this type of question will the school ask for a certificate for that award?

The reason why I am asking this is, I was notified and appreciated for one of the event, but no certificate was awarded! So will it be appropriate to mention that kind of appreciation here. (I can give a Point Of Contact for this.)

No, MIT (in all likelihood) will not request a certificate. Schools pretty much take your word on these things, unless something smells funny.
