This question is from the official guide and I'm certain that I'm overlooking something simple (but crucial). The explanation given was horrendous so can someone help me understand the answer? Thanks.
Q: Equal amounts of water are poured into two empty jars of different capacity which made one 1/4 full and the other 1/3 full. Water in the lesser capacity jar is poured into the jar with greater capacity. How full of water is the larger jar now?
A: 1/2
I can't get how it will be 1/2 and not 7/12

Assume the first jar has a capacity of 12 and the second 9. If you fill 3 litres of water in both, the first is 1/4 and the next is 1/3 filled. If you add the same to the first, it will have 6 litres which is 1/2 its capacity.
I would say, do not calculate. Just think of adding twice the quantity to the first. 1/4 + 1/4 =1/2

Jar Capacity is different and the amount of water poured is equal.
Pick numbers For the larger jar to be a multiple of 4 and smaller jar to be a multiple of 3
Larger Jar Capacity = 8 lit
Smaller Jar Capacity = 6 Lit
Equal amount of water being poured in the 2 jars (Say 2 lit)
Larger Jar is 2/8 full = 1/4
Smaller Jar = 2/6 full = 1/3
Now pour the 2 lit from smaller jar into the larger jar.
Larger jar jas gone to 4 lit (2 + 2).
Therefore Larger jar is now 4/8 full = 1/2
Jar Capacity is different and the amount of water poured is equal.
