Hello,

I would like to start practicing verbal in more test-like conditions. So, my question is- how much time can be budgeted for SC and CR questions? I think a decent general strategy is 1 1/2 minutes to 2 minutes per CR or SC. Does that seem reasonable and/or agreeable?

My main thing i'm wondering is Reading Comprehension. How long can be budgeted to read the passage and complete the questions?

Please let me know what you think. I know there is no clear-cut wrong or right answer to this, but what worked for you individually would be a great starting point for me.

what worked for me:

SC
<700 levels: 0:30-1:15
>700: 1:00 - 2:00
If I'm totally adamant on not letting it go ~ 3:00-3:30 (very rarely; If I'm ahead of time)

(average ~1:30-45)

CR:
<700 levels: 1:15-1:45
>700: 2:00 - 3:00
If I'm totally adamant on not letting it go ~ 4:00 (very rarely; If I'm ahead of time)

(average ~2:00)

RC:
2-3 minutes to read the shorter passages
3-3:30 minutes to read longer passages (4 was an upper cap for me. Don't remember going above that for any RC)

1:00 - 2:30 minutes to answer specific questions (average ~1:45)
0:30 - 2:00 to answer general questions (average ~1:15)

As you can see, I took most time on my CRs, followed by RCs and SCs. Obviously, this was tailored to my comfort. Your timing will develop once you take a few full length exams.

On Verbal questions, you want to save time on SC so you can invest that time in CR and more difficult RC questions.

In general you will want to follow these timing guidelines:

Sentence Correction: 1:15 per question (2 mins max)
Critical Reasoning: 2:15 per question (3 mins max)
Reading Comp Short: 2:30 - 3:00 for the passage, 1:00 - 1:15 for the questions (faster on the general to give extra time to specific questions)
Reading Comp Long: 3:30 - 4:00 for the passage, 1:00 - 1:15 for the questions (faster on the general to give extra time to specific questions)
