Hello Friends, I have just started preparation from my gmat. I have no idea where I stand with respect to AWA section. Please rate my essay and advise.
“Corporations and other businesses should try to eliminate the many ranks and salary grades that classify employees according to their experience and expertise. A ‘flat’ organizational structure is more likely to encourage collegiality and cooperation among employees.”
The statement above advocates the a flat hierarchy in organisation to encourage congeniallity and cooperation among employees. There can be differinng opinions on this issue but I believe that a structure and formal allocation of roles and resposibilities, which reflects through a hierarchy, in an organisation is not only indispensible to the business but will promote congeniality and co-operation more effectively than a flatly structured organisation.
Firstly every employee in a company needs to be made well aware of what is expected from him in the office. Lack of such definition of roles and responsibilites will promote a blame game and culture of passing the buck. Everyone should get a recognition in the organisation depending on the level of contribution one makes to the organisation. As the organisation becomes flatter, it awards the less efficient and lazy employees and penalises the more serious employees. Although it can be very difficult to accurately assess the skills and contribution of each employee and award him accordingly, this does not mean doing away entirely with hierarchy. A flat hierarchy only helps more to those who have bloated ego and feel offended to see other progress in co-orporate hierarchy.
Secondly, an organisational structure is needed to exercise control and force decipline and culture among the employees. The culture of an organisation has bigger influence on how people percieve each other, the amicaibility among them in work place and consequently the productivity of the company. A flat organisation can be effective only when the employees would be self deciplined and be dedicated towards the mission and vision of the company. However such values and ethos will take time if it is left on the employess themselves. As a result, an organisation with a flat organisation has a risk of complete wipe out of culture and thue efficiency.
In sum, I would say that congeniality and co-operation among employees in essentail for the success of any organisation. And in an ideal setting the employees should not feel offended on being compared with others in terms of salary and ranks. Thye should prove their merit and excel. Or alternatively they should stop thinking about such differences in organisation because it is bound to be there, fairly or unfairly, and should engage in hobbies and extra-curricular activites. In fact the organisation itself could provide such platform the the employees. For the business to run successfully, an structure is must and all the good employees will accept it.
