Requesting a deferral [#permalink]

I need advice. I applied to Fall 2010 at a competitive school and was accepted. But, due to unforeseen circumstances, I cannot attend this year. I would like to ask for a deferral. I would like to know if anyone has been in this situation or knows anyone who has been in this situation. Did the school ask for anything? If so, I want to know so I can be prepared. I need to have a decision from the school soon so I can plan accordingly. Thank you.

From my understanding, deferral's aren't all that common. However, should you have the mitigating circumstances that you suggest, I would recommend speaking with the Admissions Committee. They are normally an understanding bunch, so assuming it all very much makes sense, I would expect they would like to work with you rather than against you.

When you say aren't all that common, do you mean requests or the granting of requests?? school has tightened up about the deferral policy these years, which means you do have to some special circumstances to get a deferral. for example, if you are deferring because of job related stuff, you probably won't get it. discuss with the school and see what the policy is.

As theDreamChaser suggested, I'd check with the individual school. From what I know, deferrals (both requests and grants) are not very common and few schools grant them. For instance, Cornell only grants deferrals on medical grounds, whereas INSEAD grants very few, if any, regardless of the reason, so I'd check with the school in question.

The few people I know who deferred were due to personal or immediate family health issues.
