Columbia asks that we personally contact alum in the area and request that they interview us. This is new to me so are there any guidelines as to how to word the request e-mail????

do I include any background info??

wold you do a cover-letter-like style or more casual just requesting a mtg?

any help is appreciated!

What are the instructions from the school? Do they ask you to send your interviewer some kind of background/profile info when requesting for an appointment?

I dont have much experience with this but i suppose a note in a semi-formal tone should do the trick.

I don't think you need to do that. I just wrote a simple e-mail introducing myself as an applicant who has been selected to interview and asking if they'd be available. I sent my resume when the alum and I agreed on a time/date. I suggest doing all three searches at once and Googling each alum to find an optimal match though. The person that I interviewed with was a perfect match given my situation and I made damn well sure of that by researching each alum on the list. Result: Admitted.

I like to send a note saying I've been selected for an interview, and would they be avaliable sometime. I put my phone number in it. But I dont attach my resume, because this gives me an opportunity to talk to the interviewer for five minutes over hte phone as we schedule it - at which point, he asks for my resume, and I probe about his background with a question or two or comment about my own interest in X or Y. This lets me take a peek at my resume to make sure its well aligned with his interests before emailing it.

Course, thats been my method cause I havent been able to "pick" my interviewers- they've been assigned.
