Could you try the SC below? Please explain your answer.
Q41. Elk now live almost solely in the Rocky Mountains, which would make it seem that elk are mountain dwellers, while they once ranged over virtually all of the continental United States except for a small strip in the extreme Southwest.
A. Elk now live almost solely in the Rocky Mountains, which would make it seem that elk are mountain dwellers, while
B. The fact that elk now live almost solely in the Rocky Mountains would make it seem that they are mountain dwellers, but

my money is on B...
As mentoned in the previous post's, the original statement has "which" making it ambiguous. others are too wordy or awkward....& hence B is a rite answer..

B)
C) тАЬwould beтАЭ changes the meaning saying that elk are not mountain dwellers now they will be
D) тАЬwere mountain dwellersтАЭ while in original sentence it is present tense
E) Same as C
B is the answer

By POE, my pick was C. But the Referenced (Not official ) key is A.
Now I see a lot of "B"s.

which is used here to introduce a nonessential clause as opposed to referring to a thing (ie. Mountains)

kinda changes the meaning of the sentence with the reference to 'fact'
C. It would seem that elk would be mountain dwellers because of their living now solely almost in the Rocky Mountains, but still
because of their living - too wordy
but still - does not work
D. Now living almost solely in the Rocky Mountains, it would seem that elk were mountain dwellers, although
it - does not correctly refer to elk after the modifying clause "now living almost solely"
E. It seems that elk would be mountain dwellers from the fact that they now live solely almost in the Rocky Mountains, since
they now live solely almost in the RM - confusing - can't tell if it's the elk living close to the Rocky Mountains and hence changes the meaning of the sentence

Well even the choice with 'Being' is usually consider wrong but having said that haven't you came across some sentence that has being and is still correct choice(read best choice). Well GMAT ask you to pick the best choice and A surely isn't the best of the choices avialable.

For this SC there is a Referenced Key, A. However, there is no OA since this question comes from a set of supposedly real GMAT questions complied on the web.
You are right that on the GMAT the phrase тАЬthe fact..тАЭ is USUALLY considered redundant/incorrect. But it is not always the case as Javed says. The correct (best answer) should not change the meaning of the original sentence.
Try the following SC with тАЬbeingтАЭ. Hint: Best answer contains тАЬbeingтАЭ
The artist RenoirтАЩs last word was тАЬflowers,тАЭ spoken as they arranged a bouquet of roses just picked from his garden in a vase on his bedroom windowsill.
A. as they arranged a bouquet of roses just picked from his garden
B. as a bouquet of roses had been just picked from his garden and was being arranged
C. as a bouquet of roses just picked from his garden was being arranged
D. during the arrangement of a bouquet of roses just picked from his garden
E. while they arranged a bouquet of roses that had just been picked from his garden

My two cents - the diction that B uses is pretty non-standard and non-gmatish...
I have highlighted the WORDY constructions and non-standard usage in RED
The fact that elk now live almost solely in the Rocky Mountains would make it seem that they are mountain dwellers, but
Finally - in the correct answer choice A - the usage of WHICH is completely non-standard - GMAT is very particular that WHICH must modify a fixed antecedent and should never modify the INTENDED meanings of clauses/phrases etc.
That's my opinion. This is not to demean the choice of the question..but to draw attention towards diction.

I thought that the "which" after a comma blindly refers to the closest noun before it. Is the which in this case referring to the entire clause " Now living almost solely in the Rocky Mountains"... experts pls advise...

D. Now living almost solely in the Rocky Mountains, it would seem that elk were mountain dwellers, although starts off with now living almost.... it doesnt refer the elk. can mean to refer something else
