Little late to this one, but my first impulse is that (A) sounds simple, clear, & direct, no problems.

Looking further at "rival" for any idiom problems, I'm sure that's a common usage, and I can't find any "rule" that frowns on "rival ... for". In fact if you look at the usage samples at dictionary.com, there are a couple of examples using "rival x for y"
