Target B-Schools? [#permalink] New post 19 May 2013, 16:40
Hey all,

I'm just trying to get a feel for how wide of a net I should cast for applying for MBA program. I obviously want to shoot for the top, but I think I should temper my expectations due to the competitive nature of the application process.

Profile:

740 (50Q/41V)
3.9 GPA from Top 25 Undergrad (UMich/UCLA/UNC)
2 Years as analyst IB at top bank (GS/MS/JPM)
Strong Collegiate Extracirriculars
No amazing story or life events
Bland Letters of Rec
Interested in Finance and Investment Management mainly

I'm wondering if I'm competitive for Top 7 B-Schools, or honestly whether it would be in my best interest to gain more work experience (I personally would prefer to go to MBA to get on partner track at big PE/AM firms). Where should I look to apply?

Thanks.

I think you have a great shot. If I were you, I'd apply to a few reaches (HBS, Wharton), a few matches (Booth, CBS), and one or two less competitive schools where you'd likely still achieve your goals (Stern? Darden?).

Edit: It may make sense to leave out Stern/Darden-type schools since you are so early on in your career. Just know you may have to reapply if you chose to adhere to that strategy.

Based on your profile, you should have a good shot at those schools. I would recommend looking at schools in the NYC, Boston, and Chicago areas to align with your post-MBA goal.

Hi,

Good GMAT, GPA & profile. You would stand a good chance in top 20 b-schools. Go ahead!! You must skilfully write aplication essays & work hard on interviews to be able to convert your chances from application to admission.

Let me know if you require any assistance in school selection or profile evaluation. You may PM your details to have a discussion in length.

Regards
Erina

id also recommend hiring a consultant if u do go thru the process. theyll help you with the stories which could be a potentially weaker part of your app.
