Teach For America Prof Eval [#permalink] New post 06 Dec 2011, 14:48
Hello,

This is my first post on these boards and was looking for some advice/direction given my goals and statistics. Here it is:

1) Brief description of your full-time work experience.
Joined Teach For America upon graduating college and taught 7th/8th grade math in an urban setting on the east coast. Led students to significant gains based on diagnostic tests and end of year exams.

2) Your GMAT.
Here's my biggest challenge: 540. I took a course through Kaplan and took nine practice tests. 540 (actual GMAT) was my lowest score out of all of those tests. The last two I took were 660 and 610. I'm retaking it and realistically expect somewhere between 610-660.

3) College info: The name of the college, your GPA or grade average, your major, year of graduation. For any graduate degrees, please provide the same info. If you grades are low, please indicate if there were extenuating circumstances.
I went to the University of Washington and graduated with a degree in Industrial Design with a 3.33 GPA (2009). During my TFA years, I attended UPenn while working full time and received a Masters in Education with a 3.66 GPA (2011).

4) Significant college and post-college extra-curricular activities or community service, especially leadership experience.
During my undergrad, I was the president of my fraternity. I led the house from a bottom tier avg GPA to a top 10 avg GPA and also increased our philanthropic efforts. During my TFA years, I was given the responsibility to develop and run an after school Robotics Team in which I was responsible for recruiting, retaining, and teaching students. I was also an avid volunteer for my schools basketball team throughout the year. My second year in TFA, I was recruited to help during first year teacher professional development in which I was in charge of leading group discussions on teacher improvement. After TFA, I've moved back west and am doing some recruiting (interviews) for TFA. I also work part time at the bank now (irrelevant job) and will start volunteering at a tutoring/basketball coaching center this week.

5) Important certifications like CFA, CPA, FSA, or CA.
Just a teaching cert from Pennsylvania

6) Your target programs.
I would like to stay on the west coast for that is where I would like to work.
University of Washington (Foster) (dream school)
UC Irvine
UC San Diego
Berkeley (reach?)
UCLA (reach?)
USC (reach?)

If you have any other recommendations (even if theyre not west coast) I would greatly appreciate them.

7) Your post-MBA goal.
Non profit consulting/management. I talked to a TFA alum who works for a social consulting agency and he told me the best way to get into the field is get an MBA, go into the private sector and then move to non profit.
Long term: develop a program for student athletes to help them reach their academic potential and attain scholarships.

Thanks in advance for you help!
