When to take additional math classes? [#permalink] New post 31 Aug 2009, 10:24
So when I was in college I took only a few quant classes (double majored in comm and poli sci)...I took 4 quant classes total (Logic, Pre-Calc, Calc and Poli Sci as a Social Science) but I did well in them, getting As in all of them except Calc where I got an A-. My current position is in purchasing and I manage multi-million dollar contracts so I do work a lot with numbers, but I am afraid that I might seem a bit too "soft" for my dream b-schools.

So, considering that I will be applying next year and have a while to get all this done before I send in my apps, how much would taking a statistics course at a local college help my application? My employer would pay for it so the only thing I would waste is my time. Other course options could be macroecon, microecon, or accounting. Is there any way it could hurt? Besides not doing well, that is, and I would obviously work harder than ever to get an A

I think if you have solid grades I feel your time would be better spent on applications. Many applying have not taken math in years so it wouldn't really hurt. You may just need a refresher course before school starts. I wouldn't worry at all.

I don't think it will add as much value to the admissions decision as some leadership or community involvement - that may be time better spent. Not sure if we have a master list of all activities/leadership opportunities. Anybody has one?

Like I said I have about over a year before I send in my apps, so I don't have to worry about fitting too much into a short period of time. I'm involved in community/leadership activities already and feel that I can continue with those and still take an extra math class, but I'd only want to invest the time in the class if it was something that would impress the adcom.

I would be very interested in a master list of activities/leadership opportunities! Obviously the best ones are unique ones that won't appear on a regular list but I think it would be a great tool to give people ideas.

Sorry I took at that to mean that you will be applying for R2. I still wouldn't think it would be much of an issue since you have solid math grades and if you scored decent on GMAT Q. If you really want to it obviously can't hurt too much. But don't think it'll help too much either. 2cents.
