is the phrase 'having been......' usually wrong to be used??
because on the gmat certain terms like 'because of ', ' on account of ' etc are not idiomatic..
what the take on 'having been' ?

I haven't come across any official question that uses 'having been' to start a sentence. So, I guess it can safely be avoided.
