Hi,

It seems like you have some good reasons for the low GPA. Getting a great GMAT score will help. I'm sure you are working hard to get your GPA up, and make sure you finish your junior and senior year very strong. The admissions committee may be understanding of a rough initial start.

Three years of work experience by the time you attend business schools would be good.

And it seems like you have some great internship experience so far.

I do provide career coaching and pre-planning for people who are still few years away from apply to business School. I also provide leadership consulting and succession planning to family businesses. I would be happy to speak to you and see if I can help prepare you for the top business schools.

Please feel free to email me your info, and we can schedule a time to talk. clin@marveladmissions.com

To get into Columbia Business School there are a few steps that you need to take:
(a) make sure that your grades are as high as they can possibly be during your last two years of school since admissions weighs your most recent grades much heavier than your earlier grades (especially if you can adequately explain why they might have been lower for a period of time).
(b) start building a real community service/extracurricular activity platform. What you have now is not competitive but you have plenty of time to change this situation. Even better, make sure that you pursue leadership roles in these and make meaningful contributions to every organization you choose to participate with.
(c) I would pursue a summer internship at your family company; especially if you plant to some day work there and lead it. This way you could say that you have experience with the organization and can speak about its future (with authority) in your essays.
(d) start making connections with Columbia students and alumni so you can start building a base of support, especially people from the area where you plan to establish yourself post-graduation
(e) remember that not all finance jobs are equal in the eyes of admissions. Be selective in terms of organization and function that you choose.

Good Luck.

Dude, if you are an heir at a 1 billion dollar company, you are almost in already.

A 2.7 is a bit low GPA though, and even if you have good reasons, we don't want the school to think you're a spoiled rich kid who doesn't wanna work hard!!!
:)

Sooooo, make up for it as much as you can, and kick ass on the GMAT. If you can do that, you are on the road to acceptance.
