I am from engineering background and in RC have a bad habit of getting engrossed in details / words rather than getting through the tone, purpose, main idea. I do read a lot of online news but that material is in fact details so maybe that is strengthening my bad habit of going through the details.
I tend to read the passage and understand the passage and its contents as well and tend to reply to questions directly without referring to the passage again and getting the questions wrong. I know this is not recommended approach.
I have tried various MGMAT, Kaplan, GMATClub strategies but then somehow go back to my old habit. Any suggestions on how should I break from my old habit and read more with GMAT in mind. I am aware about the concepts but unable to break my older habit.

You must force yourself to break this habit.
I had two habits that were my downfall on my first GMAT attempt:
Not answering the question asked in quant (reading the problem too quickly)
Using my head to solve SC questions (when I thought in incorrect grammar)
Keeping an error log helped me overcome these by helping me identify them as major obstacles to success. For most test takers, he/she is his/her own worst enemy on test day.
