B,D,E use fifferent that which is wrong.
A is not as concise as C

I get E....
They increasing engage in missions far different than the tasks for X and for Y

C is the best choice.

B,D,E are out - as "Different than" is unidiomatic.
A- they increasingly are engaged (awkward construction)

The OA is A.

Parallel construction and correct usage of 'different from'

they increasingly are engaged in missions far different from the tasks for which they were built and for which their crews were trained over the last forty years

ps: always check the not underlined portion
