"method for" seems idiomatic than "method to".

'Method for' - idiomatic
Coronary angiography, a sophisticated method for diagnosing coronary disease involving the introduction of a dye into the arteries of the heart, is now administered selectively, because it uses x-rays to observe cardiac function.

bold is a modifier for Coronary angiography. 'is' - a singular verb for Coronary angiography

I will go for (A) as well.. "method for" is the correct idiom.
"involving.." should describe method..

(A) for diagnosing coronary disease involving the introduction of a dye into the arteries of the heart, is now administered selectively, because it uses - I think comma is missing, which makes it sound like disease is involving the introduction of a dye......
(B) for diagnosing coronary disease involving the introduction of a dye into the arteries of heart, is now administered selectively, because of using - "because of using" is not right
(C) for diagnosing coronary disease, involves the introduction of dye into the arteries of the heart and is now administered selectively, because it uses - sounds good to me
(D) to diagnose coronary disease that involves the introduction of a dye into the arteries of the heart, is now administered selectively, because it uses - "that.." clause refers to disease not the treatment method
(E) to diagnose coronary disease involving the introduction of a dye into the arteries of the heart, which is now administered selectively, uses
- which has wrong reference

C

I think both 'for diagnosing' and 'to diagnose' can be used in different context, but in this sentence the first is preferable because of 'method'.So, D, E - Out

Among A, B and C, only C is correct, because in A and B it seems that desease involves the introduction of...

For Vs to - for wins, D & E are out
uses vs using - uses wins, B is out

Between A & C

E-which modifies "heart" and changes the meaning..Heart is not adminstered selectively
D- Once we know what type of angiography, we have identified it...so "that" doesnot really have any key info to support with
B-because of using is akward
Okie lets see A and C

Imp part here is the stem

C* angiography, a sophositicated ...

Note the comma start-hence option, which smartly ends comma wins the race

Also,Smart sentences always put the non-essential part in commas so that demarcate that they are redudnant...

Okie, with these informations, let me remove subordinate part from the sentence

A looks

Coronary angiography, a sophisticated method for diagnosing coronary disease involving the introduction of a dye into the arteries of the heart, is now administered selectively, because it uses[/u] x-rays to observe cardiac function.

Coronary angiography is now administered selectively because it uses[/u] x-rays to observe cardiac function.

C

Coronary angiography, a sophisticated method for diagnosing coronary disease, involves the introduction of dye into the arteries of the heart and is now administered selectively, because it uses x-rays to observe cardiac function.

Coronary angiography because it uses x-rays to observe cardiac function.

Clearly A wins

Re: to diagnose/ for diagnosing [#permalink] New post 14 Apr 2010, 22:38
B/w C and D, I chose D because C misses the article 'a':

(C) for diagnosing coronary disease, involves the introduction of dye into the arteries of the heart and is now administered selectively, because it uses
(D) to diagnose coronary disease that involves the introduction of a dye into the arteries of the heart, is now administered selectively, because it uses

Is it a typo error while writing question or is it not an issue in GMAT problems to miss such articles in the choices, any pointers?

For diagnosing is correct Idiom so D and E are out

noun + (ing) form (diagnosing)

verb + infinitive (to diagnose)

(A) for diagnosing coronary disease involving the introduction of a dye into the arteries of the heart, is now administered selectively, because it uses Correct idiom, but awkward meaning. Disease does not involve the introduction of a dye into the arteries of the heart.
(B) for diagnosing coronary disease involving the introduction of a dye into the arteries of heart, is now administered selectively, because of using Correct idiom but awkward meaning similar to A. "because of using" is wrong.
(C) for diagnosing coronary disease, involves the introduction of dye into the arteries of the heart and is now administered selectively, because it uses Correct Idiom, correct sentence construction.
Noun, modifier, verb

(D) to diagnose coronary disease that involves the introduction of a dye into the arteries of the heart, is now administered selectively, because it uses Wrong idiom, "for diagnosing" is correct Idiom.
(E) to diagnose coronary disease involving the introduction of a dye into the arteries of the heart, which is now administered selectively, uses Wrong idiom, "for diagnosing" is correct Idiom.

(A) for diagnosing coronary disease involving the introduction of a dye into the arteries of the heart, is now administered selectively, because it uses - Seems like certain kind of disease, which involve the intro of dye
(B) for diagnosing coronary disease involving the introduction of a dye into the arteries of heart, is now administered selectively, because of using - same reason
(C) for diagnosing coronary disease, involves the introduction of dye into the arteries of the heart and is now administered selectively, because it uses - the best one - but "it" can be confusing. "it" refers to?
(D) to diagnose coronary disease that involves the introduction of a dye into the arteries of the heart, is now administered selectively, because it uses - same reason
(E) to diagnose coronary disease involving the introduction of a dye into the arteries of the heart, which is now administered selectively, uses - seems like heart is now administered :)

IMO - It's C - by method of elimination.
