Hey Sandipan,

Congrats on that killer 755 score, man! 🙌 I'm totally stuck on quant right now, and I heard that you had some kind of mindset breakthrough. Would you mind sharing how you switched up your thinking for quant? I'm hitting a wall here and it sounds like you've cracked the code on this.

Any tips or tricks you can share? How would you get over the pressure of trying to nail every single question?

In my case, I started to think of the quant section as sort of a warm-up period before the more focus-intensive V and DI. I told myself that even if I took my time with each question I would not face a time crunch and even if some questions seemed difficult at that time I could guess over it for the moment and later review and fix it.

Your GMAT score is goals, seriously! 🙌 I'm really struggling with the Verbal section, especially Reading Comprehension. You made some crazy improvement there.

Could you share how you boosted your comprehension? I'm particularly wondering about your strategy for the first RC question. How much time did you end up spending on it? And did that extra time pay off in terms of accuracy? How did you finally manage timing.

Time spent on RC varied from passage to passage depending upon how interesting it seemed to me. For eg, science passages took less time compared to philosophy-based ones. But in general, I aimed for 2.5-3 mins for short passages and 3.5-4.5 for long passages. I tried to answer subsequent questions in less than a minute. And yes! For me, the extra time invested paid off in accuracy in most cases.

Your GMAT success story is seriously inspiring! 👏 I've got a major problem - I can't seem to keep my focus during the Verbal and DI sections.

How did you manage to stay focused, especially with those long RC passages and data-heavy DI questions? Any tricks for staying engaged when your brain wants to check out?

First of all, take the optional break between these 2 sections. For Data heavy DI questions, if it seems that it will take a very long time to solve it, it is better to skip that question (review it at the end if time permits) since DI is the most forgiving among the 3 sections. What I mean is, that you can get 5-6 questions wrong and still manage a good score, unlike in Q and V.
For long RC passages, you have to get yourself invested in the passage somehow otherwise you will lose focus. try taking organized notes instead of monotonous reading. Spend extra time on the initial reading of the passage if required and try to make up for it in the subsequent questions.

I am also struggling with RC. Its difficult to think in depth when the time is ticking. I tend to read fast and remember less especially in dense RC. Hope i too find my strategy to pass through RC. I run short of time for last 5 question and accuracy drops too.

Have you tried doing the opposite?
Not read fast, stop to summarize each paragraph and also think about the intent (why each sentence is put here or why each paragraph is here)?

It may take more time to read the passage but you will spend less time on questions.

Yes I have tried reading slow and summarizing but i run out of time most of times
Other challenges
1. If the topic is relevant and short to comprehend then it is easy to answer all the questions
2. I get confused if the passage is long as difficult to comprehend or Para 1 links to last para (or questions based on linkage) then i tend to consume more time and accuracy also gets low
3. Difficult to recall
4. In mock test, even though i practiced summaring and note strategy but in exam i dont make notes (dont know why) due to time rush since in critical also i do take time

a. - you do not learn a new shot and practice it in a match right away, especially against a bowler at the top level. What metrics do you think you should track before you play the shot in a match?

A. - just do it, then. Try reading properly to the extent that you do not need to re-read. Your time will come down automatically at that stage.

Congrats on the score bro.
If possible can you tell us how many questions and which Q. nos. you got wrong (if any) in each section (specifically Q/DI) so we can get an idea of what's needed for the 90/89 scores?

Thanks!

babyulikeit - Sandipan answered everything correctly in Quant. He had just one mistake in DI (if memory serves me right)
