I am sharing some the General tips and my personal experience with Data Insights Section.
Study Materials: Though the section itself is a relativeley new one the content of the exam is well known.
Data Sufficiency: This comes from Quant section of GMAT Classic. Though it is coming from Quant, DS questions in DI section will need less math and more of logical thinking. The best source of new type of DS questions is the Official Guide and Data Insights Review. Some of these questions can also be found in GMAT Club DS Forum.
TPA, MSR, G&T: For the other question types, Two Part Analysis, Multi-Source Reasoning, Graphs & Tables, there are enough questions available in GMAT Club forum.
Accuracy: The very first thing to improve accuracy of your answers is to forget about time management. When you solve a question, even if it takes 10 mins solve one question during initial phase of preparation, it is not a problem as long as you get it right. During initial phase, the most mistakes are made due to one of these reasons:
- Unknown question type
- Ignoring or overlooking nuances and details in questions
- Not being able to understand or interpret word play
- Careless mistake
- Calculation error
DI section is mostly word play and logical thinking. Questions will have an perculiar or unusual word which might be the key for going for right answer. For example, in G&T question, "Graph shows total sales of each year" and "Graph shows cumulative sales of each year". Total and cumulative are not same. If you understand this word play you will get the correct answer. Unfortunately for us, there will answer choices, where one would have considered total sales instead of cumulative in their interpretation. In this case, we will directly fall in to a trap answer choice.
So, to improve accuracy, we have to give importance to some keywords. While working on accuracy, once you solve a question before selecting answer choices, make sure you took consideration of all the details in the question. Do not hesitate to repeat solving if required. By this way, you can avoid careless mistakes and calculation error if you made in you first solution attempt.
Time Management: Time management is little tricky compared to improving accuracy. There is no shortcut or easy way for this. Only thing that will always work in this aspect is practice as much questions as possible once you got confidence on accuracy. GMAT Club forum has enough questions in each section for practice.
Apart from this, another thing that will help in time management is your logical thinking and presence of mind. The DI section will test you logical thinking rather than math skills. So the answer choices will have one correct answer and multiple wrong answers. The correct answer can either be obtained by doing multiple steps of calculation or by looking at all the answer choices and observing a pattern among them. If you find the pattern in the question and the answer choices, you can complete the question in few seconds. You can also work on this aspect when you are working on accuracy.
Finally, DI section is a combination of Quant, verbal applied to logical reasoning. So all the skills you obtain in Quant & Verbal will help you in DI. There are no skills specifice to DI is required. Improve your accuracy, do as much practice as possible and don't forget the logical reasoning in every question.
I hope this helps in your preparation. DM me if you need more help.
