use the slot method _ _ _ _ _ _
boy in first place = 3 ways
in the 3rd place = 2 ways
5th place = 1 way
total 3*2*1 = 6 ways

similarly for girls
total 6*6 = 36 ways

Note that this is the same as asking "how many ways can 3 boys and 3 girls be arranged such that the boys sit in the first three chairs?"

The ways to arrange 3 boys: 3! = 6
The ways to arrange 3 girls: 3! = 6

Combined, 3! * 3! = 6 * 6 = 36
