Average speed [#permalink] New post 19 Jan 2010, 01:35
Hi,
Could anybody help me in getting the clear logic and concept behind the following question:

Q: If it took a bus 4 hours to get from town A to town B, what was the average speed of the bus for the trip?
1. In the first 2 hours the bus covered 100 miles.
2. The average speed of the bus for the first half of the distance was twice its speed for the second half.

Doubtful points:
a) Here whether the first half (as mentioned in the second statement) means exactly the distance covered in 2 hrs like the exact mid point of the journey or could be any adhoc half.
b) Average speed in the first half vs the normal speed in the second half.

Thanks in advance.

It says "first half of the distance"

Means the total distance/2. If the distance is 200 miles then 100 miles are covered.

Correct answer is E.

Discussed here: if-it-took-a-bus-4-hours-to-get-from-town-a-to-town-b-what-102361.html and here: m16-75407.html

Notice that the question was edited and it now reads:

If it took a bus 4 hours to get from town A to town B, what was the average speed of the bus for the trip?

(1) In the first 2 hours the bus covered 100 miles.
(2) The average speed of the bus for the first half of the distance was twice its average speed for the second half.
